QuickJack Part 2

As I found out after their assembly, the QuickJack lifting platforms are too tall to slide under my 308 now that I have lowered it. So I needed to build some ramps I could drive the car up onto to raise the car around 3 inches. But then I also needed to also be able to remove the center section to place the QuickJack platforms under the car lifting points. Time to break out the pencil and doodle on the back of an envelope…

The plan was to accomplish this in three steps:

The plan was to build two platforms using 2×10 planks supported by a frame of 3x2s. The center section of each platform would be removable once the car was in place. To stop the platform sections moving while the car was being driven on, the sections would latch together. To get the car up on the platforms, I’d use the small race ramps I already had. Time to head off to Home Depot for lumber and hardware…

The 308 is not a heavy car so I figured I did not need to be too careful with the structural integrity of the ramps. The 2″ thick planks would be supported along their edge by gluing on the 2x3s. For the longer center sections, I’d also glue cross braces every 24″.

Assembly was essentially measuring, cutting, gluing up and clamping. I knew all those little 1€ screw clamps I bought at Brico years ago in Belgium would come in useful eventually!

The center sections were made 72″ long which is longer than the 5000lb QuickJack platforms but still within the Ferrari 308’s wheelbase. Finished:

The next step was to drive the car up and use the lift to raise the car – something I had not yet been able to try. To be continued…
