Refitting the airbox

Putting the airbox was a whole lot more difficult than taking it off. It took me the best part of an hour to get back on and in the end, I had to make three attempts. I made the mistake of starting at the number 1 cylinder end…

I carefully put the breather pipe on to the canister, then started getting all the carburetor studs through the spacers, then put on the trumpets loosely before realizing that the I had no room whatsoever to get the rubber hose between the airbox and the inlet molding. Off came everything again.

Next, I put the hose on the airbox and started at the air intake side. Carburetor studs through the spacers, trumpets on, breather pipe back on. Then to fit the rubber hose on to the inlet… Damn… I still could not get it on. I came to the conclusion that this new rubber hose I had bought was no the best one for a US car with the extended type 3 airbox… even compressed it was too large to get in between the airbox and the air intake. A smaller airbox would have been fine I think. Everything off again.

The third and final attempt. Back on the lift, wheel off, wheel arch liner removed, rubber hose over the inlet. Just… with a lot of swearing, squashed fingers and a couple of screwdrivers to lever it on. Next airbox into the rubber hose and do up the clamp. Carburetor studs through spacers and trumpets back on.

Finally, breather hose on (this is 10x easier after you remove the oil filter).

So how does it sound now the airbox is opened up? Well, with the driver’s window open, it sounds… exactly the same… which was a little disappointing.  Drop the passenger window though and the induction noise is all there… a ridiculous (in a good way) bwaaaaahbwaaaaahbwaaaah on an open throttle. I love it. Does it seem to have gained some horsepower? Not really but it’s hard to tell after its 18-month slumber. The first “Italian tuneup” of 2019 is overdue.
